X-UAV at 2015 Beijing Expo


X-UAV had a stand at the Beijing expo displaying their new MFM material and showing off the difference between EPO and MFM.

The latest products, MFM (new materials), Comparing EPO and EPP, it is completely changes in technology and function.

Its density is between EPO and EPP, and 2-3 times rigid than the 35 density of EPO, more than 10 times toughness than EPO.

  • MFM = ?

    EPO = Expanded PolyOlefin
    EPO is a very strong yet lightweight expanded foam, similar to Styrofoam except more flexible and able to be glued with CA glue.
    Although EPO is generally accepted to be superior to EPS foam (standard Styrofoam) it does have its disadvantages. EPO is generally around 10% heavier than EPS, depending on bead size and because EPO is more elastic it's difficult to mould fine lines and shapes such as panel lines.
    There are several grades of EPO and manufacturers can adjust bead-size to suit weight,density and cavity fill requirements.
    -EPO is generally a stronger material than EPS.
    -EPO is usually heavier than EPS.
    -EPO is less elastic than EPP.

    Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) is a highly versatile closed-cell bead foam that provides a unique range of properties, including outstanding energy absorption, multiple impact resistance, thermal insulation, buoyancy, water and chemical resistance, exceptionally high strength to weight ratio and 100% recyclability. EPP can be made in a wide range of densities, from 15 to 200 grams per litre, which are transformed by moulding into densities ranging from 18 to 260 grams per litre. Individual beads are fused into final product form by the steam chest moulding process resulting in a strong and lightweight shape.

  • What do these acronyms stand for? EPO and EPP and MFM? Is this some type of new styrafoam?

  • I do also have one plane made of this new material. I am fascinated about it. Can't describe how good it is for hobby planes, which sometimes get abused.
  • I doubt that it is AIREX PXw 320 or similar as a 8' x 4' sheet x 3/4" ~ $175.00, via Composites One is in Houston, so not exactly hobby grade material!

    Now..... if you were creating a full size plane, with Kevlar/resin skin... ;)

  • Hi, I have received one plane with the new materials and it looks great and robust. 

  • @Hans Miller i worked with Airex, and it is not perfect for drones, although it can be used in some applications. 

    @Christiaan van Vollenstee i am also interested in a sample. Is it possible to obtain one?

  • Would it be possible to get samples of this material? You don't have to tell me what the material is. I would just like to evaluate the properties.
