Yet another TBS Disco build

Ok, so I know sticking an APM into a TBS Disco is not new, but it's certainly new to me.

However, my starting point is slightly different from the normal route, and would appreciate any advise others may have. Basically, instead of starting with a flamewheel, I'm starting with a quadframe small quad.

Why? Well, Jakub from quadframe does not carry spares for my particular quad or legs, so need a more serviceable platform. I am a **** pilot afterall :-) His refusal to answer questions on this matter one way or the other has made the decision to move away from quadframe airframes an easy one.

I intend to salvage as much as possible from this quad, so that will mean re-using the following:

- APM 2.5 (side exit) + telem

- T-motor 2216-11's (900kv)

- RCtimer SimonK 30A OPTO's (2-4S)

- CF 1155 props

- Spektrum AR8000 + TM1000 (though may dump the TM1000 in favour the onboard 'Core' telemetry).

The one thing I won't be able to re-use is the 11,000mAh 3S maxamps. I'll need a new battery. I therefore have 4 queries:

1. Since a new battery is on the cards, should I go 3S or 4S? Endurance and video shooting rather than acrobatics are my thing. And how big a battery can I fit in a Disco? The TBS site is not massively clear in this respect.

2. Should I downgrade the props to 10"? I get max watt errors on ecalc on 4S if I stick with 11", though 3S is ok.

3. How do I power the APM from 'the Core'? I have a 3DR power module, but would like to dump it for weight saving and tidiness.

4. What are a good set of PID's to get started with?

  • hi Euan,

this is my TBS setup and working very well

esc: 20A HK blue seriers (SimonK flashed)

    motor: MT2213 - 935KV

    Prop: 10x3.8 DJI prop

Power: 3D power module (removed the plug and hooked it up the the TBS power entry on the frame)

    Battery: 4S - 3300mAh (3S doesn't perform well)

PID: stock, only adjusted the Rate_P.

I added a little weight (if no GoPro mounted) in front to compensate the battery in the back.

APM is mounted in an APM case that is glued onto one sheet of HK foam (best result till now)

  • lol - I should do more research first <facepalm>...this post:http://www.multi-rotor.co.uk/index.php?topic=1383.0 has recommended battery weights and battery bay dimensions. That will help with the battery size query
