I have had a hell of a time getting my copter to fly right. It finally flies only ok in stabilize, but wouldnt even think about flying any auto mode. the last RTL attempt rocketed the copter toward a tree.
...while diagnosing, i found that the flight data HUD jumps around alot, while it looks like all of the videos ive seen have dead stable HUD. Im referring to the attitude gauge in the flight data screen. Randys videos show very stable gauges, and mine do not. I just cant figure it out. the copter is sitting absolutely still, on the ground.
in 2.9.1b...
When the GPS is plugged in, the flight data screen attitude gauge moves around alot, and gets worse when i cover the GPS with my hand.
When the GPS is NOT plugged in at all, the attitude gauge is steady.
All on a brand new board.
...and the tricky part is that i cant see these motions in the accelerometer data.
here are some videos w/ and w/o the gps:

can anyone shed some light on this situation?
EDIT:
I am not sure that this is related, but it appears that my copter simply has the wrong heading, and is off by ~90 degrees. it reads that it is pointed north - WHEN IT IS POINTED WEST. yes, im sure it is pointed west.
so why is the orientation drop down menu not accessible? it looks like i need to select a different orientation/rotation for my compass..
...this is all very dis concerning since this is a brand new board. i replaced the last one after it was crashed multiple times and showed logs of over 6 volts to the board. literally just got a new one last week - WTH 3drobotics?
EDIT2:
...so my mag field is 550? isnt it supposed to be around 330? what could be causing this? this number doesnt seem to change with or without the battery on and plugged in, and the APM board is ~65mm above the power harness. and the mag field appears to increase as i lift the board up away from the copter.

Well i guess the rotation option is only available to arducopter 3.0
...but it seems to do nothing to the compass orientation
