3DR Y6 Weak Throttle Response

Hello everyone,

I am trying to get my Y6 off the ground and it seems like it doesn't have enough power. I am using a DIY Y6 kit from 3D Robotics. I have had this copter for about a year now and it has flown great! However, I can barely get it off the ground now.

I have done the following to try and remedy the issue:

  1. Checked THR_MAX and it is set at 1000
  2. Recalibrated the ESCs
  3. Replaced a propeller with a small crack

Flying in stabilize mode, I am able to take off for a short period (1 - 10 seconds) but it takes nearly full throttle to do it. After that, it loses altitude and full throttle has no affect. You can see the behavior in the attached video.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this? In the video, I am at full throttle the majority of the time.

              Hey Brandon,

Did you get airborne? How's it flying?

              Regards,

        • Crap! You are right!

Just checked the Y6 DIY directions and it says to make all writing face towards the sky.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my log as well.

Glad to help! It should fly fine now.

FYI Mine weighs in at 5.7lbs (2.6kg) and I get about 7 minutes on 4S 6000mAh battery with about 20% reserve. The actual amount consumed is usually around 4700-4800mAh.

BTW I think you might need to reduce your FS_BATT_VOLTAGE, currently you have at set at 14 which will probably trigger an early RTL. I have mine set at 13.6 which is about what I'm down to at about 7.5 -8 minutes of flight. Lastly I would recommend setting up FS_BATT_MAH to around 20% of the rated capacity 1200 mAh.

Oh yeah one more thing, have you checked your C.G.? Be sure your have good C.G. location on the pitch axis. Roll is usually fairly well balanced but front to back is difficult to get on the Y6 with a gimbal/GoPro. I had to attach my FPV battery to the rear landing gear leg to get my balance correct. If you don't you'll find you don't have sufficient pitch authority when arresting fast forward flight. The bottom motor will max out before the top motors and the nose will keep bouncing at max forward speeds.

            Good luck,

            Nathaniel ~KD2DEY

            • I have noticed some issues with front to back. I just moved my FPV battery to the rear leg as well.

I went from a Blade 350QX to this and am still learning. I have a feeling tomorrow's flights will be much better than my previous ones.
