Advice for my 1st DIY UAV

I'm looking to build my 1st DIY UAV that will be autonomous. I also want to install sensors and a 3D depth perception camera (which is probably not any time soon). As of now I'm focusing on building one that can add additional functionality like that down the road.

Outside of that it will have to hover on its own and have GPS as well. For the flight controller Im going with the 3DR Pixhawk. Has anyone had and experience or issues with this one?  I also came across the Erle Brain-2 (http://erlerobotics.com/blog/erle-brain-2/). Is that better than the 3DR Pixhawk? For what the direction I'm going, would you recommend either of these?

You have come to the right place for Pixhawk! My advice would be to buy a Taranis radio so that you are future proof and build something simple first. Learn to fly a $20 store bought quadcopter around the living room before you go all autonomous, it will help you recognize when something is wrong.

    Most important, have fun.
