Absolutely disable the LVC, if enabled one ESC WILL cut off earlier than the others and then the only way is down. If they all cut off together then the only option is a collision with a planet :)
Always set a flight timer or use telemetry (APM or Tx) to warn you when the battery is getting low, not after the fact. Ideally don't go below 3.5V per cell of your battery pack.
