APM Planner and X8. Flips over on launch

Hi All:

We installed the APM software, calibrated the X8, set up 3 short way points, each at a height of 4 meters. On autopilot launch it spools up and then drags itself on the ground slightly, towards waypoint 1, and then flips over.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

David

  • Responding to your question here since the thread won't let me reply.

"Hi David.  Hope all is well.  We've flown quite a few successful mission until yesterday.  Had a crash, 3DR is looking at the log files.

Do you have any experience switching from APM Planner to Mission Planner?"

I had a crash when I switched (copter flipped). I would just reset all the parameters with Mission Planner, like you were setting it up new. Download the X8 parameters in Mission Planner and then write them to your X8.

You can review your own log files, I think there's a website called Droneshare that lets you view them in their platform on the web. If you'd like to attach them I can look at them as well. If 3DR can't find anything wrong with your logs make sure to ask them for replacement parts for whatever was broken, they sent me replacements when that happened.

    • Thanks for the background on Mission Planner.  I should have an answer from 3DR today.  If not, I'll send you over the log files.  Thanks again for all the help.

  • Are your propellers installed correctly? Are your PID settings correct/updated?

First two places I'd start if you're having issues with takeoff and flipping over.

Can you give us more info on your X8? Is it a 3DR? Is it custom built? Have you gotten it to fly successfully?

    • Hi David.  The propellers are on correct.  We did a manual test flight first and everything worked great.

It's a 3DR X8.  It's not customized and it has flown successfully just not on autopilot.

What are PID settings?  I'm new to drones. I have an experienced pilot that is helping me though.

      • PID settings are 3 variables that control how the copter flies and reacts to various external forces such as wind.

Try reloading the X8 parameters when hooked up to Mission Planner. I had some issues when I switched from APM Planner to Mission Planner with the copter flipping, make sure you're just using one to connect for now. I imagine the parameters for autopilot are incorrect, hopefully reloading them from Mission Planner will fix that. I'd also recommend contacting 3DR's support directly, they've been fairly helpful when I've had issues.

        • I'll give that a try, but maybe I'm not entering autopilot mode successfully.  When we activate the x8 on the ground then switch to autopilot it doesn't take off, it tries to fly to the first way point at ground level which results in the x8 flipping over. How do we enter into automated flight successfully?  Not sure if that's related to reloading the parameters.

Really appreciate your help.  Thanks again.

          • Hmm, I'm wondering if your commands are correct. The first command should be a takeoff command to an altitude. Send me a screenshot of your autopilot commands.

            • Waypoint settings are attached as PDF below.

              • Insert a takeoff to altitude 4 m command after setting home. The X8 will try to fly the shortest route to the waypoint, which means that it'll start translational motion while gaining height. The height sensor is also not super accurate  so definitely try to fly up to 4 meters before moving in any other direction.

                • Hi David.  Happy to report that we inserted a Takeoff waypoint at 4m and it worked perfect!  We flew two missions.  Thanks again for all the help.
