My Arducopter kit came with APC 10x4.7 propellers. I'm wondering if these are the only propellers I should use or if there is range of sizes and pitches that will work? Specifically, would it be okay to use my arducopter with 9x6 propellers?

Yes, However they need to spin faster. A propeller is more efficient with a larger area to grab. If they are too slow with larger area then trying to coordinate the attitude of the propellers is bumpy with a 2 blade prop. A 3 blade prop with coordination movement has less vibration.
