Ardupilot and arducopter

Are the ardupilot and Arducopter the same boards? can they use the same IMU and main boards?
Is the only difference between the two is the code?
Or are they different in the hardware (I saw there were some versions of the ardupilot and it seems that the ardupilot mega with its IMU shield is used for both ardupilot for fixed wing and for quad copters. am I right?, If I will have the Arducopter hardware will it work with the software for the fixed wing version?)

I am totally new to this and will appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Like John said. All ArduCopter, ArduHeli and ArduPIlot (new AP) uses ArduPilot Mega CPU board and ArduPilot Mega IMU shield. Core code is totally different between copter and fixedwings even those it might look similar. We do have a lot common too on our codes, all our Ardu.... projects uses same common libraries and in future integration will be even more tight than now. But like said, they never will be totally same due we are talking totally different type of devices.

Simple answer to your question. Yes, ArduCopter hardware will work with fixedwings too, just upload another software from our ArduPilot mega repository. So code it only difference.

There is older ArduPilot too and that is not compatible with our latest hardware or software. There is a separate software for old ArduPilot electronics.

    Hi,
Arducopter utilizes the Ardupilot Mega board and Mega IMU. There is fixed-wing code (which is actually further along than copter) for the Mega boards.
