ArduPilot hardware future plans?

I'd like to know what hardware changes are anticipated for ArduPilot in the near future?

Excluding ArduMega (which I'm not planning to get at this stage), what hardware is current and what is being thought about or planned, eg a new GPS, ArduIMU v3, etc?

The reason I ask is that I don't want to buy anything now only to find out in 1 day/week/month that hardware changes to something newer. This happened to me with the first version of the ArduPilot board which changed shortly after I bought one.

Same with the EM406 GPS - changed to UBLOX shortly after I bought mine, likewise with the ArduShield AND the FMA thermopiles.

Also can ArduIMU be used for a tricopter/quadcopter/helicopter?

cheers

  • As any continuous development and improvement project, there will be always changes and news. More people working, more ideas, more changes and news. If you want to be with the latest stuff you'll always be a beta tester and help the development of the new ideas, but if the intention is to ensure that everything will work fine and have a stable environment, so stick with the tested pieces and keep researching for news and improvements.

Well there really is nothing offficially in the works although Jordi has been known to surprise us with something new with short notice. I think gps is stable for a while with ublox. The shield could change is a better / lower cost pressure sensor is found or introduced. Siminarly the IMU - no plans for a change today but sooner or later somebody will bring out better / lower cost gyros. The rate of change is a double edged sword, isn't it...
