I got the same messages. I even thought my u-blox GPS which I bought from DIY-Drones store some weeks ago was defunct.
However, it turned out that the GPS has not been programmed as ordered (ready to work with Ardupilot). So I had to reprogram it according to the instructions I found in the Wiki.
After that the Baudrate was correct and the GPS did talk to the APM.
