Autonomous Drone for picking up objects

Hi there,

I am competing in a university challenge that entails picking up 1kg weights and dropping them back at a base. The arena is only 6m x 6m, the floor is black, the objects are unpainted metal.

Is the kind of image processing required to identify/pick up the weights beyond the scope of the only allowable controller, the ATmega 2560?

No human interaction is allowed.

Is it even possible to program a reliable flight controller without the use of another module?
