Beginner with PixHawk - which RC hardware?

So I have a Bixler airframe, and am buying a PixHawk unit, along with the 3DR telemetry radios.  What is the best RC transmitter/receiver combo I should be looking at?

I am looking for minimum hassle on setup, and plenty of features to last me a while. Price is not super-important (but i don't _need_ the rolls royce model either).

Can I simply control the aircraft via a joystick via the ground station, or is RC equipment a must?

Thanks,

Dan

Like any electronics kit its a Sony / Panasonic or Apple / Android each to their own sort of thing. Personally I like JR gear but others will swear by Futaba either of those are great brands. Spektrum is the next popular. There are cheap radios, the FR Sky Taranis is 16 channel and currently leading the low end pack http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__45025__frsky_2_4ghz_accs...

Its worth spending a bit extra cash on a TX / RX setup as it should be your primary command and control link so you need reliable well designed gear. That said in my JR I have put a module in from FR Sky to give me 2.4 and it works really well. The sticks and switches will hopefully get many years of work so again its worth thinking about quality.

This post has not helped at all has it!

  • You really need a rc tx, because there will be times when you need to take over because the more automated flight modes like loiter and so on are just not working right and perhaps flying away. Initially when you are tuning this is especially true. YOu dont simply open the box and fly especially when you start adding extras to the copter which changes everything.
