Better Understanding of Radio Setup

With radios on computer(usb) and APM2.6(battery) powered up and using 3dr Radio Config Utility,

1. Uploaded hex file from Utility directory using Upload Custom Firmware button.

2. Did Load Settings.

Both local and remote readouts show values, and all is now working well with MP.

But, what do these other functions do?

SAVE SETTINGS (save what where?)

UPLOAD FIRMWARE (LOCAL) (what is this, and where is 'local'?)

RESET TO DEFAULT (where does this come from? Tried this and nothing worked until I did the above)

These same functions are in MP, so I guess answers to the above will also be answers to setting up the radios using only MP.

Thanks for your patience with these questions.

  • SAVE SETTINGS - settings showed on screen to both radios (if they're in connection - both LEDs green solid)

UPLOAD FIRMWARE (LOCAL) - upload actual firmware from Internet to unit connected directly to your PC (local). You cant upload firmware viar adio link.

RESET TO DEFAULT - reset on-screen settings to defaults, must then be saved to units.

BTW: have you seen https://code.google.com/p/ardupilot-mega/wiki/3DRadio ?

  • The UPLOAD FIRMWARE (LOCAL) will update the radio to the current firmware version.

I believe that the current version is 1.7.

Local (I also believe) is the folder in which the radio config utility was downloaded to.

SAVE SETTINGS allows you to set the Radio ID (which is set to 10 by default) to another channel which is recommended since we all shouldn't be flying on ID 10 if we're flying with groups of folks that use the same telemetry radios.

I haven't tried the RESET TO DEFAULT button.

Also, I haven't tried uploading firmware or making changes to the Radio ID using the wireless telemetry.  I used an FTDI cable.  Not sure if/how it will work.
