Building an RC Heli

Hi,
Please excuse me if I have overlooked anything, but there are no articles here to build a simple RC heli from components like servos and motors by yourself right ?
I'm looking to do that. So can anyone tell me a site or an article or something where I can learn that ?

Is it way too difficult to do that ?

And could someone also please explain how is making one heli from the kits available different from that ?

I'm just as much interested in learning, as in having fun with it!

Thanks.

  • you need to study the mechanics of how a helicopter flies in order to answer that question. Yes, it's possible to do this with a tandem, counter rotor and fixed pitch systems but much more complicated when you get into collective pitch birds.

first, how do yo steer the heli. You can do this with simple tail input but you're limited to what style of flying you can do. Think of the cheap heli's you see on TV...(Foam) forget the name. They are fix pitched with the rotor mounted at a specific angle. To go forward, up and down you simply increase the throttle to turn you increase or decrease the speed of the tail rotor. decreasing the tail speed uses the torque of the main rotor to turn the heli...

you want to get beyond that, then you need to have a swash plate to vary the pitch of the blades.

What's the difference between a kit and DIY...the engineering.

Though it would be a fun project, unless you're doing it for fun, I'd just get a kit.

Are you wanting to get into RC hei's as a hobby?

In my experience I would say your best bet is a kit though. I dont think ive seen anyone make one from scratch. A kit is still a good deal of work setting it all up. Cheap kits are made by hk and a few others. Those two websites i mentioned are a good place to find good information and build threads.
