Can a DIY Magnetometer help?

I understand  that  gps is less accurate while stationary or with very slow ground speed.

In Auto mode I have noticed with slow ground speeds the system hunts for a correct heading often resulting in negative stability while trying to maintain a ground track to a given fix.

Will the addition of a magnetometer help maintain a more stable heading to arrive at the fix? I am would like to know if the current  APM software is able to recognize both mag headings along with gps ground track and make the appropriate corrections.

Not in V1.0, but the mag is implemented in the next version of the APM code (we're using it mostly with quads, which are often stationary, now). To maintain good tracking in the meantime, you should keep your speed up to ensure positive ground speed and meaningful GPS directional vectors.
