Cheapest IMU Board..(Interesting research)

Hi Guys,

I am doing some research on building 'low cost' quadcopters. I wanted to find out from people's experience building quadcopters on the:

1. 'Cheapest available IMU board' out there that can be used for building a quadcopter? This must have the basics sensors for giving the 'BEST' stable orientation.

ArduIMU, RazorIMU or something custom made (for e.g. by ETH Zurich) ?

2. What is the cheapest quadcopter that can be built (in $$) with available components: Like AutoPilot board + IMU board + frames + motors + etc.

I remember putting everything together from scratch last year (Accelerometers, gyros, magneto on PCB and used with Beagle bone board with custom written AutoPilot algorithm, hobbyKing frames, motors, propellors), cost me nothing less that 350$$. Every tiny bit of work was ours from inception to the end. The end result quad was not tamed to be completely stable but well worth 8 months of effort.

My Results are here

So guys, pitch in your answers for:

1. Cheapest and tamed IMU board

2. Cheapest (0.5m motor-motor length) quadcopter in market?

Looking forward to your exciting answers!

  • For an IMU then its hard to beat the new Invensense MPU-9150  $17 in 100's from invensense or 49.99 from spark fun as a break out board.... do you want GPS? Ultrasonic Alt? Pressure Alt? Telemetry... the price could vary from $45 to $250 depending on how you answer that list of questions.....
