Cheapest rig for holding a go pro

Hi,Very new to this.My background is aero modelling with model planes. So have a transmitter already.I'm looking to possibly start a drone build to hold my go pro.And looking at the most cost effective flexible way of doing it.Something that can be upgraded to incorporate an auto pilot at a later date, and maybe a gimbal.Any thoughts?Ell

  • Look at a s550 Hexacopter on ebay.
use 2213 or 2212 motors with 20 amp esc.
stay away from quadcopters unless your using a 4s or more battery they just don't have the thrust to keep a gopro and gimbal steady.
A 550 hex with a large capacity 3s and your golden.
    • That's a generalisation and not actually true. Plenty of quads on 3s will carry a gopro and gimbal if required.

      • A gimbal will give you the best overall footage due to it stabilizing the camera in flight. A decent gimbal will run from $100 on up. Also consider that that this will add weight.

Since you already have a controller you could build it up on a small frame (360mm size) then add motors, ESCs, flight control board, a 3S lipo battery and various odds n ends to complete the build.

Set aside time for testing and tuning and you just may have what you looking for.

So depending on what you want now vs. what you may want later you could build a rig for a GP to film for a low price.

    • 3s?
  • Ell,

You mention the word "cheap". How is your budget range?

Also what is your goal for the GP? Just for some picture taking? Filming? Full video production?

You can definitely keep things relatively inexpensive being a "casual" pilot but as your needs for better quality and autonomous flight go, so will your costs.

    • Looking for a small compact drone to carry my go pro. Initially for just casual fun, then in the summer filming kitesurfing and potentially at my local rugby club for filming crowd/ the game. If I'm building it myself and the fact I have a transmitter I hoped to have change from 200... But that might be totally unrealistic...
      Thoughts?

What's the benefit of a gamble? Autonomous flight is intriguing... Potentially leash it to a kite surfer and film him on the go..
  • Anyone?
