CLI esc calibration not responding

Hi!

I tried to calibrate my esc using the letter e option on the CLI. Everything got connected ok with arduino communicating well with the board through usb cable. So I type in e and send/enter and the instruction says if the lipo is connected, disconnect it and then hit enter for another set of instructions.

Problem is, when I hit enter nothing happens! No new set of instructions came up. So I click on send, still nothing happen. If I type in e again at the prompt, a rapid succession of instructions comes up but I don't think the calibration (putting throttle to max listen to beep ... the whole works) was done properly if ever! After going through the CLI route of calibrating esc (and this happened twice already) I experienced what shaeh experienced:

... The next time I connected the battery, the Arducopter made a knocking soundand SMOKE poured out of the Left Motor. (Left ESC is not hot). Ohnoes. What happened, and is it possible for Calibration to set the ESCto an unsafe setting?

Not even a maiden flight. :(

Anybody experienced this and what was the workaround?

Thanks..
