Hi there
I'm sorry for such a basic question but I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything as I'm a total beginner at this.
I need my RC plane to send back GPS data to overlay onto a map. So I've bought an ArduPilot 2.6 and a GPS unit, without a compass. I'm assuming the compass's only purpose is for people who want the plane to fly to pre-determined GPS waypoints. I'll always be flying my plane in line-of-sight so I don't want it to fly by itself so am I right in thinking I do not need a compass?
Any information or help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Clive

no, you do not need it.
On a plane, it's used for better xtracking in sidewind, not very imortant, and you can fly just fine without it.
For a multirotor, magnetometer is an essential component.
