Complete Power Shutoff

When I setup and tested my APM 2.5 using the APM Power Module, everything worked flawless. When I connect my MinimOSD it all works fine with video overlay and all. After a short time, everything, and I mean APM 2.5, the ublox GPS, my receiver, and the MinimOSD, all go dead. I can unplug the battery and plug it back in and all comes back for a short time (1 to 2 mins.) then dead again. If I unplug the OSD all is well again. The system will run for any amount of time without issue.

Is the power module having a bad time with powering the APM 2.5, my receiver (Spektrum AR8000), the external GPS, and the MinimOSD? I am using a 3 cell 3300 mAh lipo for my main power and nothing else is providing power at this time. I have a Castle UBEC that can be added if that will solve my problem. If so will I have to take the APM Power Module out of the system? How can I still use it to measure voltage and amperage draw from my pack if I use another power source?

Yes, I am a newb. Please help.

P.S. I also noticed the MinimOSD processor gets somewhat warm to touch before the system dies. Is there maybe something wrong with it causing my issue? It works fine right up to just before the system shuts down and then the display overlay gets corrupted. I figured this might just be voltage drop right before the shutdown.

  • I just added the OSD board to my copter and think it may have caused a crash...  I am using the telemetry module as well.  My chip gets hot to the touch just as described above.

Is it possible that when I am on the bench it stays within an acceptable range, but when I finally get it up in the air everything get too warm and it craters?

I got my copter off the ground for about 30 seconds before it went into free fall....I have a very similar setup as above but am using a 4s 4000 battery on APM 2.0.  I got my video transmitter system from hobbywireless.   http://hobbywireless.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath...

On a side note, could I just be going over the available power coming out of the APM 2.0 now that I am running OSD and telemetry?

    Thanks!!

Can you post a picture of how you have it wired? It sounds like there is a ground loop and this is causing the MAX chip to get hot and shutdown.
  • Not sure about the voltage regulator specs. But is it hot ? It might be a thermal shutdown if its a linear regulator.
