Dist to home/DistToMav seems inaccurate

After my first test flight, when I got home and loaded MP, I can see on the satelletite map my exact position where I was testing :)

However, when I move the cursor over the quadcopter icon overlaid on the map, it displays "Dist to home: 50642" and the DistToMav value on the Quick tab is about the same value. This seems a long way off :) Why is the value not approx 0 if that is where I took off/landed?

I even tried right click to "Set home here" but that made no difference.

Also what are the new icons at the top of the screen (red circle and yellow strip? I have MP 1.3.35 installed.

  • Right, at the time of arming using Tower the mission is download to the GCS but not home.  Home is set once a valid GPS position is established and is then set to the GCS.

  • Mission Planner home has nothing to do with the flight controller home.  If the GCS is connected at takeoff the home position can be changed on the copter through the GCS if you are taking off from a moving object and want it to land where you are currently.

    • So is it possible to confirm what is the home location known to the flight controller at time of arming?

This would be reassuring before attempting my first RTL :)

  • OK I figured out how to move the Home position. The home was set approx 50km away, but it did not appear on the satellite map under flight data tab (that is bad).

After I switched to the flight plan tab, I could see it on the map. I then dragged the home waypoint to where I want it and now the distance is 10 metres.

So why does the Home position not get updated when you Arm? How will RTL work if this is not happening?
