Dragonplate

Does any idea how much the dragonplate carbon fiber weights?

As i'm considering to use it as the basis for my quadcopter design, maybe half inch square hollow rods for the arms and 3-4 of the birch or maybe 2 birch core and 2 none birch core in the center for the primary peices to pull it all together...

for those that dont know dragonplate = dragonplate.com

  • You need to be a little more specific on the details of your design. For the arms, are you going to use woven tubing or the pultruded "hollow rod". If you are planning on the hollow rod, I would recommend NOT using that. Being unidirectional, once it starts to crack (and it will) you cannot stop the crack, pultruded CF is not a good choice for this application.

For the chassis, the upper and lower plate material choice will sort of be determined by how you are clamping the arms inbetween. If you are actually constructing some form of a clamp that will be sandwiched between the upper and lower plate, then just go for something like 2-3mm quasi-isotropic plate.

If you are going to use CF, you need to read up a bit on the inherent properties of CF, and the available layup types, and then base your chassis on those factors. You can do it the other way around as well of course, figure out what YOU want, and then see if CF fits into those plans.

Just remember, CF can be very difficult to work with, and very dangerous (once you breathe in the dust, it never comes back out), not to mention extremely expensive if you make mistakes.
