Ducted Fan UAV/MAV

Im completly new to all of this. Ive been googling and reading for days. Im trying to find information on a Ducted Fan UAV like the militarys MAV drone. I would like to build one from hobby parts but i have no clue on where to start what hardware i would use or what info to read on. It seems like a Plane style UAV is the most simple to build, next to a QuadRotor which still kinda has me iffy on the controls. BUt im wanting to start a slow project something to keep me busy and learn as i go. But i would love to build a Ducted fan Drone that is GPS controlled and autonomous... Any info would be great!

  • Ducted fans are very inefficient and will give relatively short flight times (5minutes). The launch of a ducted fan model can also be problematic as it has to achieve a reasonable speed to give the required thrust to fly.

AS a newcomer I would start at the beginning and manually fly a simply prop based aircraft first, then move to a ducted fan before looking to put an autopilot on board. In tjis way you will get experience of flying different types of aircraft before the added complications of an autopilot.
