FAA & Drones

I live in Spokane Washington and a local longtime photographer friend bought a DJI Phantom to play around with aerial photography. He is very wary of the obscurity surrounding the rules around drone use so he is very safety conscious. Below is a link to a recent article about what happened when he flew his Phantom to get a aerial perspective on a small public event called the Polar Bear Plunge that happens in neighboring Coeur d'alene, ID.

I'd like to know what people think about this.

  • I don't like what the FAA is doing with UAV's

But reading this article gave me a thought. Maybe they are afraid to make it legal for Journalism cause we would end up with flocks swarms of UAV's buzzing media events, crashing into each other and people.

Poporozziis are already a pain in the arse, imagine if they had drones!

  • Good, we need regulations, if nothing else, to reduce amount people hit by these things. Too many bad pilots/equipment there, and CAA/FAA is, after all, expected to control commertial aviation and aviation used to transport people.

Finally, "DJI Phantom" and "safety conscious" does not really fit together.

  • Well, here is a head start:
