Faulty XBee. Warranty?

Hi all.

I have two XBee´s with the XtreamBee board that I have for about three months now.

After some initial problems I managed to get them to work perfectly with the APM (arducopter code).

But today, all of a sudden, and without me changing anything, one of the XBee module has stopped working. If i put the faulty one in the adapter board, all the lights on the adapter board "goes out" and communication with the XBee is not possible.

If I put the other (working) module in the same adapter board, no problem. So the problem is with the XBee module and not with the adapter board.

I bought the XBee´s from Sparkfun and I will contact them and see what they say, but I wondered if anyone here had a similar problem or know what could have caused this to happen?

  • Very same issue i am facing with Xbee 2.4 GHz (http://www.buildyourowndrone.co.uk/ArduPilot-Xbee-Telemetry-kit-2-4...) nowadays. Can u plz PM the progress on it?

  • Krille,

I tried, sorry about your issue :(

  • Well, I got a response back from Sparkfun. They will not take it back or handle the warranty issue for the faulty module since I used it with a product that they did not manufacture (the XtreamBee board).

Feels like I´m in a catch 22 here, Digi says to contact Sparkfun to handle the RMA, and Sparkfun will not do that and blaim the fault on the XtreamBee (which is working since other XBees work in it).

I have contacted Digi again to see if they can issue a RMA directly. After all, it is their product and the module has a 5 year warranty.

  • Hi Krille,

some time ago I wrote a tutorial. At the end of it you will find a guide on how to reload the firmware. It could be worth try it. Let me know if it was helpful.

    Best regards,

  • I have been in contact with Digi Int´l who thought:
"the radio either shorted out from an over voltage or the firmware has become corrupt".

Now, I have tried to update the firmware but at best I get "Communication with modem failed". And that is when I try to reload the firmware at 1200 baud. If I use any other baud rate I get "Baud rate mismatch" (or something like that). The firmware does not get reloaded either way.

I have had the module and adapter connected to the APM and not moved or touched it for quite a while.
Last time i had it in the air it worked, now it does not. If it is true that the module has shorted out, how could this have happened? And more, will the XtreamBee board also  stop working if a shortened radio module is inserted (which is what happens to me)?

Digi wanted me to contact Sparkfun for a warranty replacement,  which is what I have done now.

  • You probably bricked it and it's just a matter of reloading the firmware.
