According to the news page, 2.40 was a release candidate for the first non-beta code. One would expect that this meant that only bug fixes should make it into the codebase. However, it seems like the code is still being actively developed with new features added since that.
What it the current strategy? Is 2.0.x in the final stage of stabilization before final release?

Jahn, i think we are in the stabilization phase. The final could be the next version.
ACM code is complex and needs to target very different frames. This explain the recent changes to try to satisfy most users.
