First multirotor project

Hey guys,

Im going to be starting my first fpv multirotor project. I didnt buy a 3DR kit however I purchased parts from here and there to build it from scratch. I first thought about using wood to build but given the time frame with other projects it so much easier for me to just buy a frame and the motors, esc i needed. After much research I also purchased a PX4 (which Im yet to receive) since I will be doing a bit of tinkering as I progress.

My question is more towards a base station / controller. As part of another project Im thinking of building a dual joystick (3-axis & 2-axis) xbee controller which hopefully will allow me to control various robot platforms (rovers/hexapods) in the pipeline. In the meantime I want to test the multirotor so what do you guys recommend as a good and yet cheap transmitter ?

9x or 9xr or the little bit more expensive FrSky Taranis ?

I think in my opinion the Taranis is bit of an overkill isnt it ? Im not sure if il ever use all the channels and at that price point i could easily get the cheap 9x and modify it.

Thoughts on this are welcome.

  • I can only comment on my experiences with the Turnigy 9x,  I have modified mine with the 6 position rotary switch to replace the top left rear varipot. added a LiFe battery pack & a back light  I fly it with a traditional 450 heli a 250 heli, a flying wing, my quad drone, and a FPV raptor with Flaps.   The firmware Hobbyking uses is suitable for my usage the mixes work as intended with traditional helicopters.  The only complaint I have with it is that under AA power it is a bit of a battery hog and will shut down below 10V.
