Flight glitch, help with log please..

I have just changed gimbals on my Spyder X8 from a Marcia Gopro to a much heavier Arris Zhaoyun Pro nex size gimbal to which I've fitted a Samsung NX300 so I've probably added ~1.5kg.

I haven't yet done a new autotune but will do soon.

On the second flight this evening, she appeared to suffer a non-fatal glitch, she was a fair way away from me and it was dusk. I started a relatively slow descent when I could see the leds move quite quickly so I knew she wasn't doing what I had asked of her. It was over within second or 2 but it really unnerved me. I brought her down without a further reoccurrence. When she landed I noticed that the gimbal had yawed by 90 degrees, I don't have yaw control so this may have been a pole skip, not sure.

Anyway, the log clearly shows some quite severe activity around 5.15 so the only conclusion is that the gimbal skipped and unbalanced her..?

Spec is Pixhawk, X8 with T Motor U5s, TM 15 x 5 CF props, 16,000 mah 6S lipo, she weighs around 7kg but makes ~20kg of thrust.

Any observations/suggestions would be much appreciated, thanks.

  • Hmm, no sign of feathers, blood or green skin when she landed unless the bird, bat or Martian had a lucky escape.. :o)

Will check the cog, do an autotune and try again this evening, it's set fair here today.

  • Looking at the log we can see the pitch and roll diverged at that point indicating a hardware issue.  You may have hit a bird, bat, or some UFO....

  • I had a chat with Arris this morning to find out what could have made the gimbal glitch in the way that it did and they suggested I check the Spyder's centre of gravity.. I can see how, if the cog is out, the gimbal's movement could adversely affect it's flight but I (now) don't see how a cog problem could affect the gimbal and make it glitch..?

  • It was definitely the momentum of the gimbal, see 5.40 here:
