FPV Quadcopter Setup for UAV Recon Missions

Okay I have read the getting started guide, and ArduCopter section along with many other sites with information regarding Quadcopters UAV. After researching the AR Parrot Drone, I have concluded to scrub that project entirely and start a completely new system however need a few things cleared up.

Here is my final objective:

  • UAV FPV quadcopter that will be used for Airsoft/Paintball Ref. Recon Missions
  • Needs to have a flight time of at least 30 minutes (more is always better of course)
  • Needs to have a decent camera with resolution that you can identify players and their team(s)
  • Can be controlled by GPS wave points w/ hover capability
  • Can fly with FPV at least 1/4 mile or longer (prob not needed longer than 2 miles though)

I would like to keep the entire project under a grand if it is all possible.

So I am completely lost as to what exactly I need in order to meet my final objective guidelines.

I know I need a Shell, motors electronics, ArduPilot, and sometype of RX/T system.

Any help to get me in the right direction would be much appreciated and I do thank you all for you time!

  • I'll be totally honest with you.

Everything you want to do is possible, except for the 30 minute duration, and keeping it under a grand.

With the basic Arducopter kit, and all the crap you need for a camera/FPV, and a 3S 2650mah battery, you're looking at probably 6-8 minutes.

Keep reading, get the basic equipment, and start experimenting.

  • This might give you an idea how its done:

Adding a Tilt/Roll Camera (to the ArduCopter)

  • Just to add some additional information....

The recon missions will be conducted woodland and urban missions. The only realistic time we will see the UAV is during takeoff and landing, however, I believe we could have it programmed to do so with ArduPilot.

I was looking into using the Aerial Video System 2.4GHz 1000mW which can be found here: http://www.rangevideo.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPat.... If there is a better camera system by all mean please let me know.
