Hi,

I know the Hero 2 is NOT suitable for photogrammetry. I just wanted to know if the Hero 3 is working for photogrammetry and if it does, how the quality of the Pictures compares to i.e. a Sony NEX 5 for typical Photoscan 3D models applications.

Thank You

  • Hello,

Technically, gopro 3 works well with agisoft. No problem.
The lens distortion is not a problem, you do not have to calibrate. However, I do not advise you to sell photogrammetry products made with  gopro3 ... too imprecise.

Also, you will never reach the quality of a 3D model or a texture made with NEX.

To summarize, the gopro 3 is perfect for fun.

  • This guy made a GoPro 2 work:  http://www.paulillsley.com/GoPro/Airphoto/

GoPro Hero2 Aerial Imaging and Mapping Project
  • I've also tried Photoscan with GP and it simply cannot stitch the results, even after a proper lens calibration.  IMO the problem is the lens, more so than the sensor or image quality.

  • I've tried once GP3.
But GP lens are 160° wide angle.
Too much distortion for photogrammetry/mapping services.
