GPS/RTL fails after car ride.

Hello DIYDrones peoples.

I had RTL dialed in really well with my quad and it'll nice and confidentially RTL to a precise spot, in my garden that is.

I figured I'd take it to a large field a few miles away and push it to it's limits for once. The first thing I did was test RTL as I feel much better having that safety net there, but it started to circle. Really quite fast. It shot off to the right, back a little, overshot the launch point and almost came down somewhere to the left of launch. I took manual control to stop it crashing and WTF'd quite bad.

Got home, same thing happened in my garden. I recalibrated the compass, adjusted some RTL/WPNav settings to slow it down and it once again had it landing on a dime. "Great" I thought and got back in the car, back to the field and it landed quite close on the first test. Flew it out further for a longer return journey but the same thing shooting off in a giant circle getting lower and lower to the ground was happening.

What could this be? Could the car ride be shaking something to the point of messing up the compass or GPS? I'm out of ideas when troubleshooting this. Help!

  • I had a similar problem tonight.

Did a test flight in my back yard, switched RTL on, all seemed ok but on its way down it did the slow toilet bowl descent. I couldn't react quickly enough so had to let it run its course; no hard crash, but did break a prop.

This happened after performing compassmot. I don't know if there's any correlation, but RTL worked very well 10-15 flights previously so I had confidence in it.

How did allocating RTL to ch6 fix it?

    • I meant I put manual compass declination on ch6. Lets me adjust it in the field and iron out any toilet bowling without having to drag a laptop around with me, which would take longer anyway.

  • After quite a bit of pissing around, it was indeed the compass. Allocating it to ch6 let me recreate and fix the problem on the "fly", ha, so to speak.
