Alternately, I know the E384 basically does what I'm looking for, but I have an IRIS+ with a Pixhawk I'm quite happy with, but it's unclear to me if the APM in the E384 is really a significant difference.

Its quite simple to cut a hole in the foam belly to install a camera of your choosing. Getting it to trigger from the AP is well documented in the wiki. There is no rational reason to buy the Aero-M over the Aero unless you value the Pix4D software.
