hexcopter for aerial photography

Hey guys, i have built my first quadcopter using the APM 2.5 board. Flies really well and i am now working on a hexacopter for aerial photography and GPS aerial mapping.

I have a few questions.

I need to select the best motors for the best flight time. I want to have this bird in the air for as long as possible. I am hoping all up with camera this will weigh around 2kg. What motors should i use to lift this weight and get a maximum flight time. I will be happy with 15 minutes.

Also, this brings me to batteries. What would be the best battery to use, or would it be better to use 2 batteries?

Frame and Gimbal are from copterframes.com

Please let me know what you think of the above gear and some help with the above questions would be much appreciated!

Thanks guys!

  • Well this question gets asked a lot (flight time) and to be honest there is no real good answer. This being because there are so many things that will affect flight time. Some of which include (but not limited to) Prop size/ balancing, total weight of drone, mah of battery to be used/ "c" rating of that battery, etc.

The best answer that anyone will/ can give you is to experiment. I personally use some cheap China stuff with a DJI 550 knock off frame, a 5000mah 30c battery, and poorly balanced 10x4.7 props. Under light flying (low wind, mid throttle) I can get about 14-18 min of flying. I'm sure that if I am to balance the props better that could easily add 1.5-2 mins of flying time.
