And now I have found my solution as well - I used the dull, flat edge of a utility knife to push horizontally against the points of the C and it slid off.
Most of what I could find with google about C clips used C clip removal tools or involved C clips different than those on my motors, so hopefully this helps someone.

OK, never mind, I found the solution. Just remove the C-clip on the bottom of the motor and pull the top with the shaft out.
Good to know - but how do you remove the c clip?
