Problem:-
I mostly fly on my own which makes it difficult to use a laptop and change PIDs in flight so I usually land to upload a new value. If I trusted my settings more perhaps I could go ‘heads down’. My flying field is not great so frequent landings and T/O is increasing the risk, and using battery.
Suggestion:-
Within Mission Planner have a routine that would increase selected PIDs, perhaps using a temporary flight mode, or toggling a flight mode switch. The MP voice should be used while the plane flies a figure 8 overhead.
I would envisage the voice output something like this:-
1 “Tuning mode active on roll servo ‘P’ value”
2 “currently 0.4, setting 0.6, toggle mode switch to accept”
3 “0.6 set, toggle any time to revert”
After perhaps a minute for you to observe
4 “toggle to revert to 0.4 else keeping 0.6 in 5,4,3,2,1”.
Then back to 1.
Tuning ends when a revert toggle is seen. Perhaps then move to the next selected PID.
As a refinement perhaps the tuning routine could check for oscillations and advise.

Hi Vince, I normally flip into loiter (which I'd previously tested) and then change a setting. If in a repeating Auto mission and it's done the loop a few times then I can change something and go back and watch the for difference. I'm using a relatively slow stable plane which while in a navigating mode I can easily take my eyes off it for a minute or so. Sometimes I get a flying buddy (if available) to just keep an eye out and report if anything goes awry while I'm concentrating on the laptop.
