I'm trying to throw together a quick frame for a Quadcopter. I've noticed some designs have each ESC mounted on the arm near the motor. Otherwise, a larger majority of designs I've seen have the ESCs mounted on the central unit.
Is either a better decision? The ESCs are more likely to be damaged when mounted on the arms, so that is a likely negative for mounting them that way. I'm not sure what a con would be for mounting them in the center. Maybe noise near the APM?
Any suggestions/ experiences?

I didn't think about heat factors with the ESCs. On the arms it is then. Thanks for the info!
The esc will give huge interference on sonar, so it's best placed far away from the sonar if you have any.
In the cooling airflow under the motors is optimum, there are some conclusive tests showing cooler ESC's are more efficient. Haven't heard of the ESC's interfering with the APM but would possibly if mounted very close to the controller.
