I figured out what my problem was: damaged motors. During a previous crash into a tree, three props were held fast by branches while the motors were powered. During repairs, I thought the motors were okay as they seem to spin fine during testing. But they were indeed damaged, as I replaced them and the problem went away. Lesson: If a motor gets stuck while power is applied, it is damaged and needs replacement.
