Low cost high speed digital still camera?

Hi,

does anybody know a digital still camera that can take pictures in reasonable high resolution (let's say, 5MP) at high speed (let's say min. 5pps)? And is affordable?

Taking stills from a video which was taken from a UAV doesn't really work. Too bad quality.

The end goal is to send a UAV on a mission, let the camera run during some part of the mission and then evaluate the photos after the UAV returns.

  • Using a DSLR or other consumer camera will not work if you need continuous footage. For example the Canon DSLR cameras might be able to do 5 FPS for 20 or 30 shots but eventually their internal buffer will fill up and they will stop until some data gets written to the card and leaves the buffer. The GoPro HD HERO2 is the only "affordable" option I know of but it won't do 5 FPS in the photo mode, more like 1 or 2 FPS.

  • I dont know how you would trigger it but I remember that the Casio had a line that would would do 1000 fps video and burst 30 frames a second still.  for about $300.  I think it is the Exlim but the resolutions you want are not supported at those rates.  I think 1000 fps video was 240x240

Basically it was a poormans slow motion camera

  • Do you mean five pictures per second?  That's a lot.

The GoPro does 2 pictures per second at 11 MP.

The other option is to use CHDK, which is a substitute firmware for many Canon cameras, which will allow, ah, I think a max of 1 picture per second.  The info is here:  http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

It's easy to use...and I am sure you could find a used Canon camera of 5MP or higher for not much money.

  • Buy a Canon, as you like.

Run firmware CHDK for your model (search if there are firmware available to your camera) that could setting really short shoot, and be happy.. :-).

    After, post your results here.

Best regards... sorry my poor english!
