I'll be up front,
Brand new to this. Almost fanboy level of excitement. But old enough to know to do research and planning. Had an RC helicopter years ago. Love building it, but never got the feel for flying it. I have "adult" level funds and, as long as I start the project, patience. (Firm believer of measure twice, cut once)...
I originally got hooked into drones through the AR angle of the parrot drone. That lead me to the DJI, through wanting to take my GOPROS along. The tinkerer in me fell in love with the idea of building my own.
My goals are pretty simple, and I'm willing to go steps at a time.
maximize air time of course
be able to EVENTUALLY carry dual go pros in 3d housing
be expandable, gadgets (sonar, fpv, gps), programming, etc
so yeah, thats about it.
I'd like to pick up a frame and do everything from there.
My first obstacle is... will quad copter be enough?
Honestly it will be a year before I am attaching the 3d housing (at least) but I want this to be a permanent project.
hex? oct?
I'll do enough leg work to make intelligent questions, just need to know who to ask.
Thanks for the time spent reading my rant.

So..... Last night, was out with my lil' phantom, completed the startup sequence, waited for the green lights, etc etc. Did some low level hovering, then went a bit higher up to play around with the different modes. Not my first time doing this. HOWEVER it was the first time that the phantom HAULED BALLS in a random direction. went to gps mode / home lock and pulled back on the stick... No avail. Needless to say goodbye phantom, you will be missed. After I realized that wasn't going to work, I shut off the controller hoping the failsafe would kick in....
I took the time to do a full start up, to ensure the GPS recorded "home"
Back to the budgeting board.
Thanks for all the input. Picked up a DJI Phantom, to learn on.
Loving it, got the go pro hanging underneath, getting a whole new perspective.
So the turbo ace matrix.... Looks to be a stellar kit. 6lbs payload capacity / 30 min flight time?!?!?!?
I love the looks of it (yes really)... any feedback on this particular quad?

"quad" is not restricting minumum thrust you need.
yes, "quad" could be more than enough.
For and smoother movements, you can choose hexa. octo would be an overkill, (assuming you don't seek extra weak motors)
