MinimOSD Telemetry

Hi Everyone

I'd first like to apologies that I'm asking such a stupid question but I've looked through this forum and cannot find my answer.

I've been set with the task of getting live video feed and GPS location back to a ground station. I've chosen ArduPilot for this but I'm a little confused over whether I need telemetry and an MinimOSD or will the MinimOSD provide telemetry data?

I've been given a budget so I don't want to buy anything I don't need. Can I receive live video and GPS data just through a MinimOSD? Does the MinimOSD just format the FPV with telemetry data or can it actually act as telemetry module by itself?

Any help or links to other threads would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  • There is still something I think was asked here that I also seek the answer too. I don't think it was answered.

I'm looking at a "Master set" that included Telemetry Radio and OSD. I'm still not clear on why one would need both. To me it seems they are just options? Either telemetry to ground control or telemetry to display? So, if I were planning to fly fpv say, wouldn't just OSD suffice?

  • The minimosd is an o)n s)creen d)isplay. It is the man in the middle between your camera and your video transmitter. It also needs a connection to the APM to ask and read the mavlink messages that are sent out periodically. The APM sends on this "channel" lots of stuff, basically all the things you can also read via a log using a USB. You can use software like "Minimosd-extra" which includes firmware for the minimosd and a config tool to layout the screen with the stuff you want. You can pick where and what appears. In your case you mentioned GPS but your free to fit much more on the 25x12(its something like that) text screen. Take a look at the pics and play with the tool and you will see how it works.

On its own the minimosd knows nothing it just overlays text onto a video signal. Mavlink is the data format, telemetry is the data. I hope i havent oversimplified. The same data that goes over mavlink for live consumption can also be written to the flash on the apm and viewed later when you hook up the copter using a usb to a computer.

When you have minimosd setup, your video reciever on the ground will see the video signal sent by the copter video tx which will include your telemetry data text and pic.
