MP merging into Qgroundcontrol

I read somewhere recently that it is planned for MP to merge into Qgroundcontrol and then dissapear. I cant find the article now so sorry, no link to it.

What are your thoughts on this?

I loaded qgroundcontrol last night and found it difficult to get my head arround. MP is very intuitive and extremely easy to use. qg seems to serriously lack the simple features and UI of MP. Alright MP has some bugs but what software doesn't.

I would be very dissapointed if the qc UI didn't get a major makeover in the merger process.

I would be very interested is hearing others thoughts on this.

Cheers...

  • Hi Roger, I hope MP will continue into the future for a while at least. I have used Q ground control a little and agree that it is very unintuitive and hard to use. If MP is discontinued, I will be looking for other alternatives.

I think we will see a fragmentation of ground stations in the future. The new android based ground stations are much easier to use than QGroundControl and even MP, and the convenience of using a tablet in the field means that for many users who only need basic functionality, they will be the way to go.

MP has tried to cram a whole lot of different features into one bit of software. I wonder if some of the configuration tools and things like geotagging and antenna tracking could end up moving to other, specialised, software? Unfortunately, the constant adding of other features seems to have taken the focus away from the actual mission planning itself.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing one of the new Ebee commerical aerial mapping drones in use. It's a small $45k flying wing, but when you see how seamlessly it all operates and how good its mission planner is, you can see where at least some of the money went. Setting up routes and landing corridors is really well done in this software and it just seems to work so well out of the box, without having to tweak hundreds of settings. I hope we can get the open source stuff up to that standard one day.

  • Hi, don't worry, it will be simplified.
