MT3329 default mode write protected?

Greetings,

I bought a couple of these for a project where I'm just using them with an XBee to send GPS info.  While the default mode will work, I'd much rather change it to something more suitable. Unfortunately, it appears that the NV RAM has been write protected, since it says 0 for the number of times remaining to be updated.  If you try the update anyway, it just says flash failed.

Has anyone else confirmed that you can't change the power up default settings?

Does anyone know of a place that sells the same GPS but without the write protection?

Thanks,
Rusty
