Pixhawk causing motor sync issues.

I believe I have a problem with my Pixhawk and was hoping for some help.  Also posted this on rcgroups.

The issue is that when my speed controllers are hooked up to the Pixhawk they exhibit a bad sync issue.  However when they are connected to my old APM (3.1) or just a receiver directly they do not exhibit these symptoms.  This has resulted in 4 crashes now until I just tonight narrowed down the issue to the Pixhawk.

Can anyone advise what is going on?  Here are the specs of my setup:

Afro 30A ESC's with SimonK firmware (have tried all versions, and made my own with various parameters)

Tiger MT2216-9 1100kv motors

4S 3700mah battery

Simon K and low KV motors are a bad combination. Are you flying your Afro ESCs with Pixhawk?

                Hello,

SimonK and low KV WAS a bad combination but not anymore, at least not since I've used the SimonK firmware 2013-09-20 release.

I use HK Blueseries 40 amps ESCs flashed with this version of SimonK firmware, on RC Tiger 3515-400KV motors, in an coax octo (X8) configuration, with 15x5 props. (and pixhawk of course)

Works perfectly good without sync issues, so far...

                • I just got my Afro 30A ESC's and I also got my Turnigy Plush 30A ESC's yesterday. First I setup one motor with the Afro and strapped the hex down. Using the throttle stick I couldn't get it to go out of sync. I would get an occasional flicker of the red light but that was it. It wasn't until I setup a throttle cut switch where with the throttle stick at full throttle and turning the throttle cut on and off it would go out of sync and not regain it.

I then hooked up the Turnigy plush and doing the same tests I couldn't get it to go out of sync. I don't care for the non linear throttle though on it. I have a Arduino nano coming and plan on flashing them with BLHeli and test it again.

In the meantime I took the Afro I tested with and flashed it with the 3/6/14 release of the afro_nfet firmware. I will test it tonight to see if it made a difference or not.

                  • Glad to see you were able to re-create the problem, if only to help us get to a solution.  Any chance of uploading a video of the sync problem?

For me the 3/6/14 firmware didn't make a difference.  Even tried with the comp_pwm parameter.

              • yes I am flying afroesc on both the Y6 and quad. all are 850kv motors with mostly 10 inch props (Y6 bottom motors are using 11 inch props)

              • Yes I have AFRO 30a I just flashed with the latest firmware to date. I do test this week.

I not understand is that many people (may have seen on youtube)
uses low KV motor with esc SimonK and pixhawk no problem. I myself have a Hexacopter (naza v2) 320 kv and 320kv in octocopter (Wookong m) also with esc SimonK and I is not the problem.

but my latest small drone with sunnysky x4110s 580kv + AFRO SimonK it does not work ...

Here are some video of person who uses pixhawk with low KV motor and simonk esc

                • first video is UltraESC not afro....problems starts when u want to use bigger props and less cells LiPo in order to achieve better flight time...so when your motor usually uses 15 inch props on 6S you probably can use 18 inch on 4S(its not that simple but almost..)..motors and esc than working in a different way(much slower) what normal ESC can not handle(something about magnetization)..maybe someone can explain better....

                  • 3702934219?profile=originalThat is bcs you have motors for 4s...try to find motor for 6s and 15 props and than test it with 4s and 17..18 inch.....

For example on my 1st Y6 I am using this on 4S 18x5.5(from my old setup with 6S and 15x5.5)..it can carry 4.5kg-(batt+cam+gimbal) and fly around 30 min with 2x4s 10AH 5.5kg RTF

and this might be better solution,so I build another y6

I just finished my build and stil testing what is best fo octa...

                  • I did my configuration using a eCalc table! performance and optimal configuration for use. I can not use 17 "with 4s. kv and ideal for the 4s and 15x5.5.

  • Well, bad news.  I received my replacement Pixhawk finally today, and it has the same issue as the old one.  So what do I try now?

To recap, the sync issue exists on all 4 of my Afro ESC's and the Turnigy Sentry 60A ESC when connected to the Pixhawk.  Both with an 1100kv and 2200kv motor. The same speed controllers work just fine connected to APM and just a receiver.  So I can only conclude that there is something with the Pixhawk that is causing the problem.

I'm very disappointed that the replacement didn't resolve the issue but am still willing to work to fix it if I can get some direction on what to try.
