Pixhawk successor

Hi all,

I am new to this system and now I want to get Pixhawk but I saw that each year new model is coming out. Considering that Pixhwk is more than one year, are we going to see it's successor?

I found out some boards like Pixhawk firecap, Erle-board and Erle-brain but I do not know if they are successors of  Pixhawk.

Pixhawk has only 256KB of RAM which is not that much in today's mobile world. Is it possible that they use RAMs with high capacity as well as powerful CPU so we can be sure that it is going to be run latest version of APM for a long time?

Thanks.

  • Well, it concerns you that Pixhawk has 256KB RAM, while it runs mostly same code that still fit into APM 2.x , with it's 8K RAM.

You do the mistake of comparing resource-usage to microsoft bloat, or high end cellphones that usually can shoot 20 12Mpixel pictures in 2 seconds, or run advanced graphics.

Pixhawk processing power have no reason to change for some years, but feel free to wait - there will always be a new version "soon"  :)

    • Thank you Andre but please do not get mad at me I told that I am new to the topic.

So if I get Pixhawk is it going to be updated for 2 3 more years?

      • I am not mad, just a cocky answer :-)
Just think of how old APM still are, and will be updated.
The old APM s will not get some new, advanced features, due to resources.
They will still get updates and fixes, it's not about forcing people to buy new stuff, it will be supported for a long time, and Pixhawk most likely even longer.
        • Thanks Andre.

It seems that you are experienced and I am really glad to be able to use your experiences.

          • Further to Andre's comment - whilst the older APM boards will still receive updates, their limited resources (eg. the 8kb RAM) will mean that the Pixhawk will receive features and functions that the APM will not. So buying a Pixhawk now is fine - it's current generation and will receive the latest updates for quite a few years:)
