Pixhawk Wiring

A little confused on setup.

1) Can I run Helicopter mode H1 on the my transmitter?

I like the menu options with Helicopter mode on my transmitter rather than Airplane mode.

2) Hooking up the ESC to the Pixhawk channel 8 output.

There is no "Mode Set 1" or "Mode Set 2" There is only Set Point or Channel 8 input. Which one do I choose? How to I configure it? I am not seeing it on the Wiki. See picture below as reference.

3) Transmitter channel 8

does that now need to be reassigned as throttle instead of Aux 8? Channel 3 is now just Pitch?

All input would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello, Sean, first of all, congratulations on the setup in your helicopter. I'm trying to set up my helicopter and I'm doing the same with your H1 configuration  function of the tx and puted the sequences you put in, but I'm not having success in the rotor acceleration. Could you help me figure out where I went wrong? Big hug for all.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I currently have no mixing setup in H1 Helicopter mode so all servos and tail move the right way.

Let me know if this works for radio outputs.

Throttle seems to respond like normal running it like this. When it's armed it will let me run the motor and when it's disarmed it wont.

I set it up this way because I running a Castle ESC so the built in governor controls head speed and I can have throttle hold and set my throttle curve in my radio to a certain RPM.

I know you said not to have throttle on channel 8 but it seems to be working fine can I run it this way?

I have dialed in the tail for the most part so next step is blades on.

  • Congrats to your maiden flight!

Using the heli mode makes the setup complex and can sometimes cause some problems. Especially the throttle curve and pitch curves. In Arducopter the pitch control and throttle control are seperated but you have them coupled in your Tx. Furthermore the Idle Up mode can mess them up as well, so the Heli mode is really not that good and may lead to an unnecessary crash.

The best way to set up the Tx is still put it in airplane mode, CH3 controls only pitch, CH8 controls only throttle and let them uncoupled. It's great to have a govenor so you simply only need to take care about the pitch control

    • For an advanced user, using H1 heli programming is a totally viable method.  Sounds like Sean knows what he'd doing.

      • Great to know i'm not going crazy thank you for the help.

I was able to get a few flights in yesterday still working on the Rate P and FF to get more control of the heli without inducing shaking.  I will post my numbers soon for everyone to see.

        • Is it now possible to takeoff and land in Loiter mode?

          • Here are my params so far. Seems to be flying pretty well in stabilize. Loiter is good but seems to still hiccup every once in awhile. 3702823251?profile=original

The throttle curve and pitch curve are separate in the radio just like a normal helicopter would be. I have CH3 set as pitch only and CH8 set as throttle only. My idle up curves follows only CH8 that way I am able to have a constant throttle governed by the ESC. Having my TX setup as H1 helicopter mode gives me more menus than Airplane mode.

      • That's cool, then everything works just perfect.

  • Hi Sean,

Yes, you can use an H1 Helicopter profile in your radio, if you are experienced in programming your Tx.  We state to use Airplane mode in the profile, simply because many users do not know how to program their radios well, and the helicopter mode can be confusing.  As Randy states, the #1 important thing is that there is no mixing of the controls.

Mode 1 became "Setpoint" and Mode 2 was renamed "Ch8 Input" to be more descriptive of their functions.

Ch3 is now purely "Collective Pitch".  Ch8 should not be connected to a "throttle" function in your radio.  This simply needs to be slaved to a 2pos switch if using Setpoint.  It's on or off, and the speed setpoint is set with that parameter.  If using Ch8 Input, then the idea there is to mix a switch and a pot.  So the switch controls on/off, and the pot controls the actual speed when "on".
