Purple Polygons in APM Mission Planner

Does anyone know what the purple polygons all over the map in the current version of APM Mission Planner are?  They are distinct from the circular no-fly areas around airports (see the attached screen grab).  Are thes additional restricted air space areas?  I couldn't find a legend anywhere.

  • The data source available I found was here:

and looking at Oregon, one lousy spot in the middle of the state.

T is for Temporary. For permanent information, you have to look at sectionals maps.

and looking at Oregon, one lousy spot in the middle of the state. Or so I thought! Upon zooming in on some of the suspect area I noticed on Mission Planner I found tiny circles on the FAA map as well. However, I also found that lots of information is missing as well. Leave it to the feds to not keep something important like this up to date. I see a large swipe taking up the entire valley the city of La Grande lies in (am guessing for the borate fire planes). Not published in the data source used by Mission Planner. Much the same as the Umatilla Army Depot. Not shown on Mission Planner. That all points to the fact that the source of data provided for apps such as Mission Planner is not being updated properly. Seems almost like a deliberate omission just to trap the unwary pilot and make our passion look even worse in the eyes of the media.

I thank you Michael for providing what information you have access to and making available to those of us in our community and a big shout out for all the work you have invested in Mission Planner. Thank you!

So you can see a restricted area over Disney World and Kennedy Space Center.

  • I have seen a few guesses. The main one stated they marked out notams from the FAA. Nope, as of today only about forty notams are listed nationwide and none for the state of Oregon. The polygons seem to be at random in my area. Some make sense, others not.

Our local airport as well as all of the other airports in  eastern Oregon have no markings however there is a purple circle just north of Halfway Oregon. That circle is out in the Eagle Cap wilderness area. Been there done that and trust me, nothing there but elk and trees.

Some of the circles do make sense such as the one in idaho around the Idaho National Laboratories near Arco but it missed the area by about 20 miles. No ring around the Umatilla Army Depot. You fly over that and the big black helicopters WILL come visit you!
