Quadcopter spazzing...scary! -- Please Help

I have a quadcopter (relatively new) and its doing the weirdest thing. It flies fine, but at completely random times (might be getting worse as the battery depletes) one (probably) of the motors just kind of fires off. By that i mean it makes the whole quadcopter spazz for a second. Sometimes it gets pretty bad. Once i was way up high and the throttle control just stopped working. it started spazzing constantly and seemed to be in altitude hold mode (even though it was in stabilize/regular mode). It was really scary but i was able to bring it down for a hard landing. Whats going on? I have an ardupilot mega 2.5 flight controller... It started doing this for no apparent reason. I disabled the low battery failsafe but that didnt help. Thanks.

Usually the reason is mechanical failure. Could be heat or wear and tear. Or manufacturing tolerances. I would suggest a new motor.
