My question is .. as im new to Ardupilot
Can I use a regular serial port on my computer to connect to one of these modems (see link below) at my GCS and then just connect the other serial modem to the serial input on the Ardupilot in the plane?
Will this work?

You'll need a UART TTL like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-TTL-UART-6PIN-Module-Serial-Convert... to connect the board to your computer. However, why would you want to go with these devices? It's showing 2km at 9600 baud and 4.5km at 1200 baud. Which means to get to 57000, it will probably only go 50 meters....scratch that. It can only do 38,400 (which is really plenty fast)....but your range will still be horrible.
