questions about 3DR Iris+

Recently bought Iris+ and got into whole RC thing. Trying to learn everything =)

I had a question - 3DR stated this quadcopter has 915 MHz radio, but on the back of the remote there is small module attached which says 2.4 GHz. 

Could someone explain what 915 MHz band is used and what 2.4 GHz for?

    The big antenna pointed down in this picture is your 915mhz telemetry antenna.  This is for the connection of your telemetry to whatever you use as an optional ground station (ie . laptop, tablet, phone).  

    Hidden on the inside and in this example -->Click Here and taped down in red is your rc receiver that connects to your handheld transmitter. It may be different in yours if you chose a spektrum radio set.

      The reason why I am asking - I am trying to understand if it is possible to use only 2.4GHz or only 915MHz radios to save weight and battery. And probably understand how two radios are different while likely getting 'NO' answer :)

        The 2.4Ghz receiver/transmitter is for the radio to control the Iris. 915MHz is to allow laptop/DroidPlanner to communicate with the Iris for mission planning or configuration. You need 2.4ghz so you can control the Iris using the radio.
